The Law Library holds over 1,600 titles and 10,000 volumes in print and electronic subscriptions. Use our online catalog to search our print collection, which include the resources listed below. Federal, California, and local court rules

    California Civil Practice Guides

    • Available for common legal subjects, such as employment litigation or family litigation. They offer practical guidance for people in litigation, such as identifying jurisdiction, selecting venue, drafting pleadings, responsive procedures, and alternative remedies. Also available online through Westlaw.

    California Forms of Pleading and Practice

    • A multi-volume resource organized alphabetically and by subject matter. Use the Index to locate chapters with key words. Each chapter contains the subject's legal background, a research guide, a procedural checklist, and relevant forms. Forms of Pleading and Practice is also available online through Lexis+ and the LexisNexis Digital Library.

    California Jurisprudence

    • Gives comprehensive analysis of California Law. It is searchable by index and organized alphabetically by subject area. The treatise is an excellent resource for those interested in researching a legal issue, less so for community members looking for practical guidance during litigation. Available in print and online through Westlaw.

      California Points and Authorities

      • Provides templates for memoranda of points and authorities. These templates are useful at multiple stages of litigation, such as motion practice and drafting trial and appellate briefs. It cross-references Forms of Pleading and Practice, and patrons will often need pieces from each guide to draft a complete motion. Available in print and online through Lexis+.

      CEB  Practice Guides

      • Extensively discusses the legal background of commonly litigated legal issues. CEB practice guides are helpful for more complex legal issues. To identify the most helpful guide, use CEBOnLaw, narrow by subject area (e.g. family law or real property), and peruse the related publications. Available in print and online through CEBOnLaw.

      Nolo Self-Help Guides

      • Broad, easy-to-read guides designed for self-represented litigants. Each book has practical guidance and background legal information on its designated subject. The quickest way to identify which Nolo guide is useful is to access Nolo online, identify the subject area, and browse related titles. For example, when looking for information about Small Claims in California, you might access Nolo -> select ‘Rights and Disputes’ -> ‘Small Claims Court’ -> and, finally, peruse the titles on offer. Available in print and online through the Legal Information Research Center.

      Rutter Group Practice Guides

      • These guides discuss the legal background of a wide array of topics, citing frequently to case law.They contain forms for complaints, answers, motions, and briefs. These guides are an excellent resource for patrons looking to research an entire topic or for patrons who want to locate relevant case law but do not know where to start. Available in print and online through Westlaw.

      Self-Help Resource Center Guides

      • Binders with templates of commonly used California court form packets. The binders have examples of some filled-out court forms and instructions for filing once complete. While some guides are out-of-date, they contain past versions of forms and filled-out examples that may still be useful in completing certain forms.

      Witkin Guides

      • These guides focus on summaries of California law, California criminal law, California procedure, and California evidence. The treatises are navigable via a combined index, which is in 4B with the summary of California procedure. Available in print and online through Westlaw.
